What Is In-Play Betting?

In-play betting β€” also called live betting or in-running trading β€” lets you place bets after a sporting event has already started. As the match progresses, odds shift to reflect the current state of play: a goal changes football odds instantly; a break of serve moves tennis prices dramatically.

On a betting exchange, in-play markets let you do more than just bet β€” you can trade. Open a position early in the match, and close it (by laying at longer odds or backing at shorter odds) once the price has moved in your favour. This locks in a profit regardless of the final result.

β–Ά Example: Football in-play trade

You back the underdog at 4.0 (3/1) before kick-off. They score first. Odds compress to 1.8. You lay them at 1.8 to close the trade β€” locking in profit on all outcomes before half-time.

Why BetDEX for In-Play Trading

Speed

BetDEX is built for the Bettor and finalises transactions in under a second. For in-play markets where odds can shift in moments β€” a corner kick, a yellow card, a missed penalty β€” transaction speed is critical. Slow platform latency means orders execute at stale prices.

No Stake Limits

Traditional platforms restrict winning in-play traders. BetDEX has no stake limits, meaning you can trade larger positions as your edge and confidence grow β€” without the platform penalising your success.

In-Play Trading Strategies on BetDEX

  • Back-to-lay (pre/in-play): Back a favourite pre-match, then lay at shorter odds when they go ahead in-play.

  • Lay the draw: Lay the draw pre-match in football. When a goal is scored, the draw price drifts β€” close by backing the draw at longer odds for a profit.

  • Momentum trading in tennis: Tennis odds fluctuate dramatically between games and sets, creating consistent short-term trading opportunities.

  • Scoreline arbitrage: After a goal, rapidly assess whether new prices reflect true probability and trade accordingly.
